The Greatest Love

"Love is patient; love is kind.  Love is not jealous, it does not put on airs, it is not sobbish.  Love is never rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not prone to anger; neither does it brood over injuries.  Love does not rejoice in what is wrong but rejoices with the truth.  There is no limit to love's forbearance, to its trust, its hope, its power to endure.

Love never fails.  Prophecies will cease, tongues will be silent, knowledge will pass away.  Our knowledge is imperfect and our prophesying is imperfect.  When the perfect comes the imperfect will pass away.  When I was a child, I used to talk like a child, think like a child, reason like a child.  When I became a man I put childish ways aside.  Now we see indistinctly, as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.  My knowledge is imperfect now; then I shall know even as I am known.  There are in the end three things that last: faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love."

1 Corinthians 13: 4-13

Arrupe Prayer

Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, falling in love in a quite absolute, final way.  What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.  It will decide what you will do with your evenings, how you will spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitide.  Fall in love.  Stay in love.  And it will decide everything.

Pedro Arrupe, SJ

Canticle of Mary

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed; the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his name.

He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his his arm , he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

(Luke 1: 46-55)

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me;

Body of Christ, save me;

Blood of Christ; inebriate me;

Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

O Good Jesus, hear me.

Never permit me to be separated from you.

From the evil one protect me,

at the hour of death call me,

and bid me to come to you

that with your saints I may

praise you forever.

The Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love

Where there is injury , pardon

Where there is doubt, faith

Where there is despair, hope

Where there is darkness, light

Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,

Grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console

to be understood as to understand

and be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive

it is in pardononing that we are pardoned

it is dying that we are born to eternal life.

The Beatitudes

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for rightousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.  Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5: 3-11

Saint Teresa of Avila

I think often of St. Paul's words that 'all things are possible in God.'

As you set out on your journey take no notice of the warnings people give you, or the dangers they suggest.

It is absurd to think that you can travel along a road of bandits to reach a costly treasure without running any risks.  The worldly think that happiness consists of journeying peacefully through life.  Yet for the sake of making an extra dollar they sacrifice their sleep night after night, and leave others with no peace of mind or body.

You are travelling by the royal and safe road along which our Lord, all the elect, and all the saints have passed.

Put aside the misgivings that the world would impose upon you.  Take no notice of public opinion.  This is not time to believe everything you hear.

Be guided only by those who conform their lives to the will of God.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.  In verdant pastures he gives me repose; Beside restful waters; He leads me; he refreshes my soul.

He guides me in right paths for his name's sake.  Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and staff that give me courage.

You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; You annoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

Prayer For Priests

O Jesus, I pray for Your faithful and fervant priests; for Your unfaithful and tepid priests; for Your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for Your tempted priests; for Your lonely and desolate priests; for Your young priests; for Your dying priests; for the souls of Your priests in purgatory.

But above all I recommend to You the priests dearest to me; the priest who baptised me; the priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way.  O Jesus, keep them all close to Your heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity.  Amen.

Angel of God,

My Guardian Dear,

to whom His love commits me here,

ever this day be at my side,

to light and guard,

to rule and guide.  Amen.

Remember O most gracious virgin Mary,

that never was it known

that anyone who fled to your protection,

implored your help or sought your intercession

was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee

O Virgin of virgins, my mother;

to you do I come, before you I stand,

sinful and sorrowful;

O Mother of the word Incarnate,

despise not my petition,

but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Mercy Loves

Mercy loves when love is not deserved.

Poor Clares, Galway

Hail Mary
Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
art thou among
And blessed is the fruit of
thou womb,
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Our Father
Our Father who art in heaven.
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Glory Be
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Studying in Jerusalem several years ago, I was very moved by the power the Sabbath has to reclaim and rejuvenate lives of believers, a time for complete rest.
